The Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1

The book of Deuteronomy

 Chapter 1

1. These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan-in the wilderness on the plain opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Di-zahab. 2. (By the way of Mount Seir it takes eleven days to reach Kadesh-barnea from Horeb.) 3. In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the Israelites just as the LORD had commanded him to speak to them.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 1 to 3)

Oh God, my Father at times we experience periods of dryness when we do not feel Your presence, even though You are never far away from us. I pray for Your support, love and care especially during such moments because I can't survive a second away from You, my God and Father Amen.

4. This was after he had defeated King Sihon of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, and King Og of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, 5. Beyond the Jordan in the Land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law as follows: 6. The LORD our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7. Resume your Journey, and go into the hill country of the Amorites as well as in the neighboring regions-the Arabah, the hill country, the Shephelah, the Negeb, and the seacoast- the land of the Canaanites and the Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8. See I have set the land before you; go in and take possession of the land that I swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their descendants after them."

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 4 to 8)

Oh, reader, of this blog, this is a glorious day! God may be telling us that that He is going to give us that big break, the moment that we have been waiting for, that job opportunity or promotion is at hand and that it is time to take the long awaited decision and move ahead. The opportunity is here and now, are we going to make the leap of faith?

9. At that time I said to you, "I am unable by myself to bear you. 10. The LORD your God has multiplied you, so that today you are as numerous as the stars of heaven. 11. May the LORD, the God of your ancestors, increase you a thousand times more and bless you, as he has promised you! 12. But how can i bear the heavy burden of your disputes all by myself? 13. Choose for each of your tribes individuals who are wise, discerning and reputable to be your leaders."

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 9 to 13)

Oh God my Father at times You show us that the original plan that you made for us needs some fine tuning. By means of changes in our situation, You give us strong indications where the changes are needed and at times even the possible solutions needed to implement the changes. At other times You permit us to use our intelligence and do the head-work ourselves by using our brain intelligence, and discernment through prayer.

14. You answered me, "The plan you have proposed is a good one". 15. So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and reputable individuals, and installed them as leaders over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens and officials throughout your tribes.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 14 to 15)

Oh God, my Father, we are so unfair. When You answer our prayers at first we welcome and praise your name, however, if there happens to be anything that we are not completely happy with we turn against You and ask why You permitted this and that to happen, even though You acted according to our wishes. Oh God please forgive us for such an attitude of back stabbing or ambushing because we do it among ourselves and we end up doing it also with You, forgiveness and mercy my God and Father.

16. I charged your judges at that time: "Give the members of your community a fair hearing, and judge rightly between one person and another, whether citizen or resident alien. 17. You must not be partial in judging: hear out the small and the great alike; you shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God's. Any case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it." 18. So I charged you at that time with all the things that You should do.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 16 to 18)

Oh God my Father as parents You have also given us these qualities as part of our role. You want us to have a good ear to listen to each other without being biased or judgmental. You gave us the skills to solve the day to day problems, however, when we experience the most critical issues, You also wish us to bring them to You so that You could give us the much-needed support.  Even though You gave us this order at times we prefer to0 do it our way and only refer to You when we have exhausted all our attempts and are standing with our back to the wall feeling defeated and dejected.

19.Then, just as the LORD our God had ordered us, we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, until we reached Kadesh-barnea. 20. I said to you, "You have reached the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving us. 21.See, the LORD your God has given the land to you; go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has promised you; do not fear or be dismayed."

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 19 to 21)

Oh God my Father, after such a long time of praying and hoping and maybe even fasting, You bring us to our promised land, that can be anything that we ever wished for or aimed to reach. Oh God, You are fair with us Your children. You do not promise us a cat and give us a dog instead. Although it seems an eternity before You lead us to the promised land, because we are in the same boat as many others, when the appointed time as decided by You arrives, You give us the go ahead to enter the land. I pray oh God my Father that when my time comes to enter heaven You find me worthy of doing so Amen.

22. All of you came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the land for us and bring back a report to us regarding the route by which we should go up and the cities we will come to". 23. The plan seemed good to me, and I selected twelve of you, one from each tribe.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 22 to 23)

Oh God, my Father You are so patient with us, that You agree with our plans and give Your blessings even though our plans may be inferior to Your plans for us. Many times we are happy and satisfied with a fraction of the resources that humans can generate and never think of turning to You who is able to fulfil all our needs if our plans are according to Your will for us (As they always ought to be) Amen.

24. They set out and went up into the hill country, and when they reached the Valley of Eschol they spied it out 25. and gathered some of the land's produce, which they brought down to us. They brought back a report to us, and said, "It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us". 26. But you were unwilling to go up. You rebelled against the command of the LORD your God; 27. you grumbled in your tents and said, "It is because the LORD hates us that he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorites to destroy us.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 22 to 23)

Oh God, my Father forgive us for we are so ungrateful and selfish. After a long time for praying for this and that, You generously answer our prayers and we refuse to do our small but important share of the task. At times we may become so lax and lazy that we expect You to do all the work, without our moving a finger. It is not enough to pray for a job or change in job, one needs to register for work and send copies of their Curriculum Vitae to those employers who post their vacancies online or in newspapers. It is our responsibility to do our part. It is not fair to blame You, my God for what was lacking in us Amen.

As an example of such an attitude I invite you to click on the following link:-

Story of the unlucky Guy

24. They set out and went up into the hill country, and when they reached the Valley of Eshcol they spied it out 25. and gathered some of the land's produce, which they brought down to us. They brought back a report to us, and said, "It is a good land that the LORD our God is giving us." 26. But you were unwilling to go up, You rebelled against the command of the LORD your God;

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 24 to 26)

Oh God, my Father even though You give us proof beyond proof, we still show doubt in You. For some reason, we are not able to place our trust totally in You. Our sinful nature creates a barrier of distrust in You. I am very sorry oh God for our attitude I understand that it hurts but this is really the truth. Yesterday I had an interview which was a divine providence. My attitude was:

'this is payback time for all the hurt I received from people who work at this particular agency'

However, when I was there You showed me a new reality, one that shows that You can change both people and even past situations and that I am not to hold prejudice against nobody, whatever the circumstances that I had experienced and that nobody dips his foot in the same river twice. In fact, during the interview, it became apparent that those people who had been unjust and booted me out of the agency had been booted out themselves and they no longer work there. God, You are my justice Amen. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.

27. you grumbled in your tents and said, "It is because the LORD hates us that he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorites to destroy us.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 27)

Oh God my Father when things or circumstances do not go our way, we tend to place the blame on You for no reason whatsoever. When placing the blame on God or others we are denying our own responsibility on to others instead of owning our blame in the situation Amen.

28. Where are we headed? Our kindred have made our hearts melt by reporting. The people are stronger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven! We actually saw there the offspring of the Anakim!

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 28)

Oh God, when we follow You we never know exactly where we are heading to, but we are sure that our destination is heaven. Throughout my life, You sent me to different places where I not only worked but also met other people to whom I made You known. After nine years You are calling me to move on to another workplace to start all over again. My life has become that of a missionary. Thank You, Jesus.

29. I said to you, "Have no dread or fear of them. 30. The LORD your God, who goes before you, is the one who will fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your very eyes, 31. and in the wilderness, where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, just as one carries a child, all the way that you travelled until you reached this place.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 29 to 31)

Oh God, my Father, I thank You for protecting me, for fighting my battles, for going ahead of me. Without my being aware You do much work, and for that I really thank You forever and ever. Thank You for taking care of me even before I was born and even up to this very day and more to come Amen.

32. But in spite of this, you have no trust in the LORD your God, 33. who goes before you on the way to seek out a place for you to camp, in fire by night, and in the cloud by day, to show you the route you should take."

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 32 to 33)

Oh God my Father although You are so loving and faithful at times I still feel doubts in Your will. At times I do not understand why certain things happen, but then I ask myself, why should I understand, when all is under Your control? by day You guide me in Your ways, and by night You guard me against the enemy within and beyond, and make preparations for the day to come. Therefore there is no need for me to feel stressed or worried especially when I have a Father such as You Amen.

34. When the LORD heard your words, he was wrathful and swore: 35. "Not one of these-not one of this evil generation-shall see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors, 36. except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his descendants I will give the land on which he set foot, because of his complete fidelity to the LORD."

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 34 to 36)

Oh God, my Father, one thing that You do not like is when we do not place our trust in You. Even myself as a father to my eight-year-old daughter feel hurt when she does not trust me, let alone You my, God and Father, however, on the other hand, those who do place their trust in You will be given the reward that we all wish to get that is a place in heaven in Your presence Amen.

37. Even with me the LORD was angry on your account, saying, "You also shall not enter there. 38. Joshua son of Nun, your assistant, shall enter there; encourage him, for he is the one who will secure Israel's possession of it.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 37 to 38)

Oh God, my Father I totally understand Moses in his situation, for I am in a similar position. I have been assigned to a location at my work, where at times I feel all alone. The people for whom I am responsible will soon rebel against me and I feel totally helpless. I am dancing between management and residents, however, I am the middle person. I pray that You send me a trustworthy assistant Amen. I do not wish to lose the promised land because of a rebellion in the camp and like Moses would have to empower my replacement to take over my position. As You know this is a new job and I have nowhere else to turn to unless you provide a healthy alternative or solution to my issues Amen. Thank You, Jesus.

39. And as for your little ones, who you thought would become booty, your children, who today do not yet know right from wrong, they shall take possession of it. 40. But as for you, journey back into the wilderness, in the direction of the Red Sea.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 39 to 40)

Oh God my Father, Your ways are not always my ways, and on the other hand, this can also be the contrary. You gave me the opportunity after so many years of waiting to be a social worker and now it seems to be slipping out of my hands. On reflecting in might be that the reason for giving me this opportunity is that You may be paving the way for the future of my daughter who if it is Your will may follow my footsteps.

Oh God I thank You for this time of crisis, please help me to reap the benefit of this sensitive time in my life, and although it really seems to be a wilderness please lead me to my red sea in the direction of the promised land but not towards my Egypt. However, if You wish that I experience a period of time in my Egypt I accept it as being Your will Amen.

41. You answered me, "We have sinned against the LORD! We are ready to go up and fight, just as the LORD our God commanded us." So all of you strapped on your battle gear, and thought it easy to go up into the hill country. 42. The LORD said to me, "Say to them, 'Do not go up and do not fight, for I am not in the midst of you; otherwise you will be defeated by your enemies.'

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 41 to 42)

Oh God, my Father, please forgive me if I have acted against Your will. I may have thought that You wanted me to return back to the world of Social Work but this may not have been according to Your will. I put on my gear in order to advance, but You were not with me throughout the battle, now my enemies have defeated me. This may be why I am feeling so down and dejected and unsure of what the next course of action will be, however You already know it. Oh God, I pray that You either join me in the battle,, or take me out as a casualty so that I could receive my healing and be ready for plan B. Amen.

43. Although I told you, you would not listen. You rebelled against the command of the LORD and presumptuously went up into the hill country.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verse 43)

Oh God, my Father many times You draw our attention in relation to important issues and many times we rebell against You. I pray for forgiveness for such moments my God and Father Amen

44. The Amorites who lived in that hill country then came out against you and chased you as bees do. They beat you down in Seir as far as Hormah. 45. when you returned and wept before the LORD, the LORD would neither heed your voice and pay you any attention.

(Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 44 to 45)

Oh God my Father, I will not hold it against You if you chose not to listen to my prayer and help me in my situation, however throughout the years You have always been faithful, loving and kind, even though I did not always obey Your will and ways. I pray that if it is not Your will that I go back to my old job, or else please give me the needed skills to perform the current job. Although I am not worthy I pray that You do this for the sake of my family Amen.

Oh God, my Father, I would like to end the first chapter of the book of Deuteronomy with the following prayer.

Oh God my Father, I am so blind, please restore my sight and enlighten my ways, I am also deaf towards You, please place me on the same wavelength, so that we can communicate on the same channel. Oh God my brain does not always function according to Your will, please help me to restrain negative thoughts, and behaviour such as moments of anger and restore my soul by means of a spirit of love, and gentleness. Restore my body for it is ridden by stress! Please restore me as a whole person for many times I feel weak and tired Amen. Thank You, Jesus, for listening to my prayer and may Your will be done.
